PRAYER BEADS (MALAS)

In Buddhist practice, prayer beads (or ‘Malas’) are used for counting mantras or prayers. They can be made from gemstones, wood or seeds and full-length malas traditionally have 108 or 111 beads. Wrist malas traditionally have 21 beads, however this depends on the size of the beads. All Tibetan Buddhist Malas have a ‘Guru Bead’ in the shape of a Stupa at the top of the mala (or wrist mala).

Malas can also be worn as a beautiful necklace or bracelet and as a reminder to be mindful. Jalu Jems malas are handmade in Nepal and India, and most have adjustable knots so that the size and tension can be adjusted.
