In Tibetan Buddhism, it is traditional to present an offering scarf or khata as a sign of respectful greeting and also as an offering to lamas after an empowerment or teaching. In Tibetan culture, Khata are also used at many ceremonial occasions, including births, weddings, funerals, graduations, and arrival or departure of guests. Khata generally have the eight Buddhist auspicious symbols as well as mantras woven into or printed onto the fabric.
